¿Qué hacer con 15 mil imágenes de net.art?
En realidad, son muchas más: al menos 15 mil, aunque todavía no hemos tenido el tiempo de catalogar todos los discos y memorias acumulados a lo largo de los años, ni de encontrar una plataforma adecuada para presentarlas, organizarlas y preservarlas.
¿Por qué es importante y necesario conservar este archivo de imágenes?
Porque constituye un archivo histórico que refleja una etapa fundamental en la historia del arte de la que hemos sido tanto espectadores como protagonistas.
A lo largo de nuestra trayectoria profesional como periodistas y comisarios hemos ido preservando memorias y, con ello, construyendo un vasto archivo de imágenes de net.art y arte digital que abarca un periodo muy amplio, desde los años noventa hasta la actualidad.
La mayoría de estas imágenes corresponden al periodo 1994-2014, conformando en su conjunto una instantánea única de lo que fue la época de los pioneros del arte en la red y de la génesis del media art en general.
Tratándose de obras de net.art la gran mayoría de estas imágenes han sido creadas por nosotros capturando pantallazos de piezas que al día de hoy han incluso desaparecido de la red y que en varios casos ni siquiera conservan sus autores. De estas obras ahora tan solo quedan los artículos que escribimos y las imágenes que guardamos y consideramos que esto tiene un valor documental incalculable.
Being net.art works, the vast majority of these images have been created by us by capturing screenshots of pieces that have even disappeared from the Internet today and that in several cases do not even preserve their authors. Of these works now only the articles that we wrote and the images that we kept remain and we consider that this has incalculable documentary value.
What to do with 15,000 net.art images?
In reality, there are many more: at least 15,000, although we have not yet had the time to catalogue all the disks and storage devices accumulated over the years, nor to find a suitable platform to present, organize, and preserve them.
Why is it important and necessary to preserve this image archive?
Because it constitutes a historical record that reflects a crucial stage in the history of art, one in which we have been both spectators and protagonists.
Throughout our professional career as journalists and curators, we have been preserving memories and, in doing so, building a vast archive of images of net.art and digital art that spans a very wide period, from the 1990s to the present day.
Most of these images date from 1994 to 2014, together forming a unique snapshot of what was the era of the pioneers of art on the web and the genesis of media art in general.
As for the works of net.art, the great majority of these images were created by us through screen captures of pieces that, in many cases, have since disappeared from the web—and in several instances, their authors have not even kept copies. Of those works, what remains today are the articles we wrote and the images we saved, which we consider to have incalculable documentary value.
